Venezuela national baseball team delivered one of the biggest moments of the World Baseball Classic, defeating reigning champion Japan national baseball team 8–5 in a thrilling quarterfinal matchup at loanDepot Park in Miami.

The turning point came in the sixth inning when Wilyer Abreu launched a three-run homer that flipped the game and ignited the crowd. The Boston Red Sox outfielder’s 409-foot blast gave Venezuela a lead they would not surrender and ended Japan’s 11-game WBC winning streak.

Earlier, Venezuela began its comeback with a two-run home run from Maikel Garcia, setting the stage for Abreu’s decisive swing.

With the victory, Venezuela advances to the semifinals for the first time in 17 years and also secures a spot in the 2028 Olympic baseball tournament alongside the United States and the Dominican Republic.

Venezuela will now face Italy national baseball team, which defeated Puerto Rico national baseball team 8–6 in another dramatic quarterfinal.

For Venezuela, the message is clear: the job isn’t finished yet.
