Lionel Messi delivered another storybook chapter in his legendary career on Saturday, guiding Inter Miami to its first-ever MLS Cup title with a 3–1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Argentine superstar finished the night with two assists, earning MLS Cup MVP and helping complete one of the most dramatic turnarounds in league history.
Just 18 months ago, Miami sat at the bottom of the MLS standings. Now, Messi — the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner — has claimed his 44th career trophy and his third with Miami, after the Leagues Cup (2023) and Supporters’ Shield (2024). But this championship, Messi said, was “the real objective.”
How the Match Unfolded
Miami struck early when a shot from Tadeo Allende deflected off Vancouver’s Édier Ocampo for an own goal. Despite the rocky start, Vancouver rallied, controlling large stretches and eventually tying the match 1–1 in the 60th minute through Ali Ahmed.
But as the tension rose, Messi took over.
In the 71st minute, he dispossessed Vancouver in midfield and set up Rodrigo De Paul for the go-ahead goal. Deep into stoppage time, he assisted Allende again to seal the 3–1 victory, setting postseason records along the way — including 15 goal contributions, the most ever in a single MLS playoffs.
A Night of Endings and New Beginnings
The match also marked the final touches of Sergio Busquets’ career and the retirement of teammate Jordi Alba, two Barcelona legends who reunited in Miami. For first-year coach Javier Mascherano, lifting the trophy alongside Messi was especially meaningful.
And for David Beckham, who began the dream of launching a Miami franchise over a decade ago, the night was emotional. From struggling to secure a stadium to finally seeing Inter Miami crowned champions, Beckham reflected: “It’s been an incredible journey.”
What’s Next
Messi, already the 2024 MLS MVP and favorite for a repeat, has a contract that could carry him into his early 40s — and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Miami will open next season in a new stadium near Miami International Airport, aiming for back-to-back titles.
As Beckham put it: “Leo is a winner. It’s as simple as that.”
