Toronto’s own Maria Alejandra Guardado is making her mark globally. The young Salvadoran-Venezuelan Canadian advocate and emerging leader took the floor on October 31st 2025, at the United Nations Human Rights Council Social Forum 2025 in Geneva, delivering a powerful address on Education for Political Rights, Participation, Citizenship, and Voice.
Before global leaders, diplomats, educators, and delegates, Maria called attention to the lack of youth and women’s representation in politics:
“Only 2.8% of the world’s parliamentarians are under 30, and women under 30 make up just 1.4% worldwide.”
She urged global leaders to include young people in shaping the world beyond the 2030 Agenda — ensuring their voices help define the next generation of global goals.
Born and raised in Toronto to Salvadoran and Venezuelan heritage, Maria has represented Canada and civil society at multiple United Nations conferences, building a reputation as one to watch. Her journey from community service to international advocacy reflects the strength and resilience of her roots.
Quoting Nelson Mandela, she reminded the assembly:
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.
From Toronto to the world, Maria Alejandra Guardado is proving that the next generation of Latina leaders isn’t waiting for change — they’re creating it. 🇨🇦✨
