Reggaeton legend Daddy Yankee is opening up about life, faith, and hard-earned lessons in a new interview with Billboard’s Leila Cobo — and he’s got one piece of advice for every artist: get a prenup.
At 49, the Puerto Rican icon—now going by DY—has been through it all: fame, fortune, faith, and heartbreak. Following his divorce after nearly 30 years of marriage, and ongoing legal battles over his music companies and catalog, Yankee says his perspective on business and self-protection has changed completely.
“Be on top of everything, even if you have lawyers and accountants,” he said. “Now I’m alone, so I have to be 100% involved… Even if you’re not famous or successful and your career is only beginning, get married with a prenup. Music is unpredictable.”
The “Gasolina” star also spoke candidly about self-love and setting boundaries, admitting he once sacrificed too much for others.
“It’s very important to be clear on what self-love is and establish limits. Learn how to say no.”
Yankee’s personal transformation comes amid a period of reinvention. After finalizing his divorce from Mireddys González—his wife of three decades—he filed multiple lawsuits alleging unauthorized withdrawals from his companies, including El Cartel Records.
Despite the turbulence, Yankee is stepping into a new era. He’ll perform live for the first time in three years at the 2025 Billboard Latin Music Awards on October 23, and is preparing to release his first Christian album, Lamento En Baile (Mourning In Dancing), on October 16.
