Three years after Paraguay and Peru kicked off the very first match of the global road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, South America’s qualifying campaign is about to reach its epic conclusion. With just two matchdays left, everything is still on the line — and as always, CONMEBOL promises nothing but drama, heartbreak, and joy.
Who’s Already In?
Argentina, Ecuador, and Brazil have already punched their tickets to the 2026 World Cup, each taking very different routes but arriving at the same destination. Argentina dominated from start to finish, sealing top spot with games to spare. Ecuador quietly built consistency, grinding out results to secure back-to-back World Cup appearances. Brazil stumbled early but steadied themselves under new boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Who’s Out?
Chile’s campaign is already over. Bottom of the table and winless in their last four, La Roja’s focus has shifted to rebuilding for the future with an influx of debutants.
Who’s Still Fighting?
That leaves six nations still in the hunt for just three automatic qualification spots and one playoff berth:
-
Uruguay: Marcelo Bielsa’s side can clinch with a win or even a draw against Peru.
-
Paraguay: Chasing their first World Cup since 2010, one win could be enough to seal the deal.
-
Colombia: Winless in six, but still within reach — especially if results elsewhere go their way.
-
Venezuela: Sitting in the playoff spot, La Vinotinto is closer than ever to a historic first World Cup.
-
Bolivia: Still alive after a key win over Chile, but needing big results.
-
Peru: Mathematically alive, but their chances are slim — they’d need wins plus plenty of help.
The Games That Will Decide It All
-
Matchday 17 (Sept 5): Argentina v Venezuela, Colombia v Bolivia, Paraguay v Ecuador, Uruguay v Peru, Brazil v Chile.
-
Matchday 18 (Sept 9): Ecuador v Argentina, Bolivia v Brazil, Chile v Uruguay, Peru v Paraguay, Venezuela v Colombia.
With powerhouse clashes and underdog dreams colliding, South America is set for two nights of football theatre that could define a generation.
One thing’s for sure: by the end of September 9, we’ll know which nations will dance their way to the World Cup — and which will be left heartbroken on the sidelines.
