Receptionist, Yessica Arrua, arrested after spending $400k mistakenly paid by her employer

In a case that seems ripped from a comedy script—but with real-world legal consequences—a 29-year-old Florida woman is facing serious charges after mistakenly receiving another employee’s six-figure salary and spending nearly all of it.

Yessica Arrua, a receptionist at the Palm Beach Equine Clinic, was hired at a $60,000 salary but was accidentally paid the $450,000 salary of a veterinarian due to a payroll error. Shockingly, the actual vet went unpaid for an entire year without noticing—until her credit cards began getting declined.

Instead of flagging the discrepancy, Arrua assumed the windfall was a “bonus” based on workplace rumors and used it freely: splurging on luxury items from Coach and Michael Kors, dining out, furnishing her home, and even buying an $80,000 food truck for a friend. She reportedly gave $100,000 to her mother to help family back in Argentina.

The error came to light when the company president involved the police, and the vet confronted Arrua directly. While the receptionist later attempted to return $200,000 via cashier’s check, she claimed she couldn’t repay the rest.

Now in custody at the Palm Beach Main Detention Center, Arrua has been charged with grand theft and money laundering, both over $100,000—raising serious questions about payroll oversight, financial ethics, and just how far a “bonus” excuse can go.
