Petro initially refused to accept deportation flights, citing the need for respectful treatment of migrants, but quickly complied after Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Colombian goods, a travel ban, visa revocations for Colombian officials, and threatened to increase tariffs to 50% within a week. Trump accused Petro of jeopardizing U.S. national security by rejecting the flights and promised further consequences if Colombia did not meet its legal obligations.
