Dominican Republic authorities seize 9.5 tons of cocaine

The Dominican Republic’s Anti-Drug Agency has announced a record-breaking drug bust, confiscating nearly 9.5 tons of cocaine worth an estimated $250 million. This monumental seizure occurred at the Caucedo port in Santo Domingo, the nation’s key seaport. Hidden within a banana shipment, the drugs were en route from Guatemala to Belgium when discovered.

Key Points:

  1. Historic Seizure: The 9.5 tons surpass the country’s previous record drug bust in 2006, where 5,680 pounds (2,580 kilograms) were seized, also at the Caucedo port.
  2. Drug Transit Hub: The Dominican Republic has long been identified as a significant transit point for international drug trafficking, given its strategic location and busy ports.
  3. 2023 Crackdown: Authorities have intensified efforts this year, with nearly 47 tons of drugs seized so far.

This operation highlights both the scale of international drug trafficking networks and the country’s ongoing challenges in combating their activities. The Caucedo port’s role in these incidents underscores its vulnerability as a key entry and exit point for illicit shipments.
