In a historic collaboration, artists from Bogotá and Rio de Janeiro are transforming cityscapes across Latin America with one kilometer of murals and graffiti in both cities. Led by Bogotá’s District Institute of the Arts (Idartes) and Brazil’s Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, the project began in Bogotá’s Los Mártires neighborhood on October 24. Five Bogotá artists and five Rio artists are creating public art that reflects community stories, starting with Bogotá and later moving to Rio.

The murals are painted on significant local sites, like the Escuela Tecnológica Instituto Técnico Central, with community input guiding the design through workshops and events. This project not only showcases urban art but also promotes social cohesion by rooting the murals in local identity. Bogotá’s Museo Abierto de Bogotá (MAB) now includes over 1,000 artworks along major city roads and underpasses, turning public spaces into vibrant art corridors.

Idartes pairs one artist from Bogotá with one from Rio, fostering a cross-cultural exchange. The artists receive stipends and will travel to each other’s cities, symbolizing the unifying power of art as a form of cultural diplomacy. Through this initiative, Bogotá strengthens its position as a global hub for urban art alongside Rio, aiming to inspire future cultural exchanges across Latin America.
