A tragic accident in the Andean mountains of northern Peru claimed the lives of at least 23 individuals on Sunday evening, as a bus plunged down a slope into a river. Olga Bobadilla, the provincial prosecutor for the Cajamarca region, reported the incident, explaining that the bus was en route to Sorochuco when it veered off the road. The rugged and unpaved terrain complicated rescue efforts. The bus had departed from Celendin, according to local media, prompting the town to declare three days of mourning. Peru’s precarious roads have witnessed similar accidents in the past, such as one in September that resulted in about two dozen fatalities and another in January 2023 where at least 24 people died when a bus fell off a cliff.
