According to The Canadian Press, the City of Toronto plans to spend between $105,000 and $200,000 on new signage design, fabrication, and installation, and an additional $300,000 to $600,000 on branding, programming, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The total cost of the name change, which includes new signs for subway stops and a library, could exceed $14 million.
Councillor Brad Bradford criticized the expenditure, citing the city’s $26-billion capital backlog over the next decade and calling the renaming unnecessary and fiscally irresponsible. He argued that the public is growing tired of what he views as politically correct actions, especially given historical arguments suggesting Henry Dundas, the figure at the center of the name change, was against slavery. Bradford plans to raise these concerns at the upcoming council meeting, urging for more prudent fiscal management.
