A recent study reveals a dramatic shift in travel plans among European tourists—more than half are considering Ontario, Canada, over the United States as their next destination. The reasons? A mix of political concerns, travel restrictions, and Canada’s growing global appeal.

According to a report by The Independent, tourism in the U.S. is set to take a massive hit due to the “polarizing rhetoric and policies of the Trump Administration.” The World Travel and Tourism Council predicts that the U.S. will be the onlyone out of 184 countries to see a drop in foreign visitor spending in 2025. Factors like immigration crackdowns, increased global tariffs, and reports of detained travelers at U.S. borders have made many European visitors rethink their travel plans.

In contrast, Canada—and Ontario specifically—is seeing a surge in popularity. The Europe Pulse survey by Context Research Group found that over 50% of European tourists are eyeing Ontario as a destination. With Toronto preparing to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, interest is only expected to rise.

Vincenza Ronaldi, CEO of Destination Ontario, explained the trend: “Ontario reflects the shared values of safety, inclusivity, and authenticity that resonate deeply with today’s global travellers.” She adds that this first-of-its-kind survey offers important insights that will help the province better connect with international visitors.

Marketing teams are already at work. Ontario is rolling out new tourism campaigns in the U.K. and Germany to further boost its appeal, promoting the province not just as an add-on to U.S. travel, but as a primary destination in its own right.
