Before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. puts on the Blue Jays uniform again, he’s putting on his country’s colors.

The Toronto slugger has officially committed to play for the Dominican Republic in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, marking the first time he will represent his home nation on baseball’s biggest international stage.

For Guerrero Jr., this moment is about more than baseball — it’s about identity, heritage, and pride.

A Star Already, A Bigger Stage Ahead

Through seven MLB seasons, Vladdy Jr. has built one of the most impressive résumés in the game. Across 975 games, he owns a .288 batting average, 183 home runs, and 591 RBIs, along with multiple All-Star appearances, Silver Sluggers, and a Gold Glove.

His 2025 campaign was another strong one, but his postseason performance took things to another level. In 18 playoff games, Guerrero Jr. hit .397 with a staggering 1.289 OPS, blasting eight home runs — a Blue Jays single-postseason record — and driving in 15 runs as Toronto captured the American League pennant.

Now entering the first year of a 14-year, $500 million extension, he’s already cemented as a franchise cornerstone. But the World Baseball Classic offers something different.

Playing for the Dominican Republic

Guerrero Jr. was set to play in the 2023 WBC but had to withdraw due to injury. This time, he’s healthy — and ready.

The Dominican Republic is one of baseball’s most respected powerhouses, and having a superstar like Vladdy Jr. in the lineup only adds to that reputation. For fans back home, it’s a moment of national pride. For young players across the Caribbean, it’s another example of Dominican excellence on the global stage.

More Than a Tournament

The WBC isn’t just an event — it’s a celebration of baseball’s international soul. And for players like Guerrero Jr., it’s a chance to connect with their roots while showcasing their talent in front of the world.

From Toronto to Santo Domingo, one thing is clear:
Vladdy Jr. isn’t just playing for wins — he’s playing for where he comes from.
