The Uruguayan Ministry of National Defense has confirmed the purchase of five A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from Embraer, following an earlier agreement for one aircraft plus an option for five more. The deal, part of a fleet renewal program to enhance Uruguay’s air defense capabilities, includes mission equipment, logistics support, and a flight simulator. This acquisition positions Uruguay as the sixth South American nation to operate the A-29.

Uruguayan officials highlighted the significance of the purchase for improving border surveillance and aligning with modern security paradigms. The A-29 Super Tucano, a versatile turboprop aircraft, supports various missions such as close air support, patrol, special operations, and advanced training. Globally, the A-29 has over 290 orders across 20 operators. This marks a major upgrade for Uruguay’s Air Force, replacing aging Cessna A-37B Dragonfly aircraft from the 1970s.
