Toronto postpones birthday celebration due to potential city strike

Toronto’s 191st birthday celebration, originally set for March 8, has been postponed due to a potential strike by city workers. The Celebrate Toronto Festival was planned as a large, free downtown event featuring over 100 local vendors, food and drink stalls, and a fireworks display.

The postponement follows CUPE Local 79’s announcement that its members—who provide key city services—voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike over wage disputes. Organizers cited logistical concerns and the risk of last-minute disruption as reasons for rescheduling.

The festival will now take place on Saturday, April 5, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., potentially offering attendees better weather for the celebration.
