February 22, 2025

Toronto FC, the first MLS team outside the U.S., debuted in 2007 but struggled early, making their first playoff appearance in 2015. Their peak came from 2016-2019, winning the 2017 MLS Cup and finishing as runners-up in 2016 and 2019. However, since 2020, they have failed to make the playoffs despite having one of the league’s highest payrolls.

They have won the Canadian Championship a record eight times and finished as runners-up six times. Owned by MLSE, the club shares ownership with the Maple Leafs (NHL), Raptors (NBA), and Argonauts (CFL).

Notable players from their “golden era” include Sebastian Giovinco, Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, and current captain Jonathan Osorio.

In 2024, Toronto finished 11th in the Eastern Conference and 22nd overall with an 11W-4D-19L record. With minimal offseason moves and an underperforming Lorenzo Insigne, head coach Robin Fraser faces a tough 2025 season. They open the season against D.C. United on Feb. 22.
