Toronto FC looks set to bring a familiar face back to Major League Soccer. According to GiveMeSport’s Tom Bogert, the Reds are finalizing a loan deal for Ecuadorian midfielder José Cifuentes from Rangers, with the move expected to run through next summer and include a purchase option.
Cifuentes, 25, is no stranger to MLS. He spent four seasons with Los Angeles FC, making over 100 appearances and playing a key role in the club’s 2022 MLS Cup triumph. After leaving LAFC in 2023, he joined Scottish giants Rangers but struggled to secure a regular spot, leading to loan spells at Cruzeiro in Brazil and Aris in Greece.
On the international stage, Cifuentes has represented Ecuador 21 times, including at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
For Toronto FC, the move represents both experience and versatility in midfield as they continue to reshape their roster. With his box-to-box style and past MLS success, Cifuentes could be a major addition for the Reds as they look to climb the Eastern Conference table.
