Toronto Buried: Record-Breaking Snowstorm Dumps Up to 50 cm Across the City

Toronto is waking up under a blanket of snow after a historic winter storm dumped up to 50 centimetres across the city on Sunday, forcing closures, cancellations, and major travel disruptions.

According to Environment Canada, Toronto Pearson International Airport recorded 46 cm of snowfall in a single day — the highest daily snowfall total ever recorded at the airport. January 2026 is now officially the snowiest January — and snowiest month — since records began in 1937, with totals reaching 88.2 cm. Areas closer to Lake Ontario saw even more snow, with Billy Bishop Airport reporting 56 cm.

The storm has had a major impact on travel. More than 500 flights were cancelled at Pearson on Sunday, with hundreds more delayed. On the ground, road conditions have been challenging, with the Ontario Provincial Police responding to around 200 collisions and more than 150 vehicles stuck in ditches across the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area.

It’s also a full snow day for students. Both the Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board, along with several other GTA school boards, closed schools Monday due to unsafe conditions.

The City of Toronto activated its Major Snow Event Response Plan, declaring a Major Snowstorm Condition and Significant Weather Event. Parking is now banned on major snow routes and streetcar corridors while crews work to clear streets — a process expected to take several days.

Public transit hasn’t escaped the impact either. Multiple TTC subway segments are out of service, including the entire Line 6 Finch West, with shuttle buses running in affected areas.

Officials are urging residents to stay cautious, expect narrow lanes and snow-covered roads, and give plows space as the city continues digging out from one of the most significant snowfalls in decades.
