Thousands Gather in Mexico City to Honour the Virgin of Guadalupe

Every year on December 12, Mexico comes to a standstill for one of the country’s most meaningful traditions: the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Overnight, thousands of devoted pilgrims flooded the streets surrounding the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, carrying images of the Virgin on their backs, lighting candles, setting off fireworks, and singing prayers late into the night.

For many Mexicans, it’s said that on this day all roads lead to the Basilica — home to one of the largest Catholic pilgrimages in Latin America. Long before dawn, the massive plaza outside the church was already packed with families, musicians, vendors, and exhausted pilgrims who had walked for hours — sometimes days — just to be there.

People came with different intentions: asking for health, giving thanks, or simply continuing a lifelong tradition. Some waited patiently for priests to bless their Virgin statues, while others kneeled in tears, overwhelmed by emotion. Taco stands dotted the area, offering weary pilgrims a moment to rest before the final steps of their journey.

President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the moment, sharing that she spoke with Pope Leo XIV, who sent blessings to Mexico and celebrated Mass at the Vatican in honor of the Virgin. She emphasized that beyond religion, the Virgin of Guadalupe remains a powerful symbol of identity, unity, and peace for Mexicans.

Rooted in the 1531 apparition to Juan Diego, whose cloak bearing the Virgin’s image is displayed inside the Basilica, the devotion continues to unite generations — proving that faith, culture, and tradition are still deeply intertwined in Mexico.
