For the first time ever, the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees will face off in the postseason — and the spotlight is shining on Toronto.
After New York punched its ticket to the ALDS with a wild-card win over Boston, Yankees players and U.S. media quickly started weighing in on the matchup.
Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. said he’s “happy” to be facing Toronto, telling The Score that it’s a chance for the team to “redeem ourselves against a team that’s been beating up on us all year.” The Jays went 8–5 against New York this season, including a Canada Day weekend sweep that launched Toronto into first place in the AL East — a lead they never lost.
Even Yankees captain Aaron Judge had praise for the Jays: “They’re a complete team… They don’t strike out a lot and they’ll force your hand on defence. We’re looking forward to it.”
Over at The Athletic, reporters described the Rogers Centre as the Yankees’ “own personal hell,” noting that Toronto fans “ditch the polite Canadian trope” when the pinstripes show up. Senior writer Eno Sarris, however, predicted a Yankees win in five games, citing their power advantage.
ESPN’s Jorge Castillo echoed that view, saying New York’s power gives them “the substantial edge” in October, while Toronto’s contact-heavy approach could make it harder to generate runs when pitching tightens up.
In a fun twist, the Buffalo Bills — whose city hosts the Jays’ AAA affiliate, the Bisons — backed Toronto over their fellow New Yorkers, posting:
“Good luck to our friends up North.”
The Jays replied with “Blue Jays Mafia” and a photo of Bills QB Josh Allen in a Jays jersey.
That post sparked nearly 1,700 comments, with fans from both sides trading barbs online.
Game 1 of the ALDS goes Saturday at 4 p.m. ET from the Rogers Centre, with Kevin Gausman expected to start for Toronto. It’s the Jays’ first division series appearance since 2016 — and they’re still chasing their first postseason win since that year.
