Taking a laptop and iPad to Mexico could cost you some money

If you’re planning a trip to Mexico, it’s important to be aware of the country’s strict rules on bringing electronics. Travelers are allowed only one tax-exempt portable computing device, such as a laptop or tablet, and exceeding this limit can result in hefty tax bills. Some travelers have been charged hundreds of dollars upon arriving at airports like Cancun International for bringing extra laptops or an iPad.

Mexico’s customs regulations also limit other electronics, such as cameras and cell phones. If you exceed these limits, you could face a 19% duty on the value of the extra items. Though not all bags are searched, relying on luck could be costly. To avoid unexpected fees, it’s best to pack within the allowed limits.
