A severe storm has caused widespread flooding in Toronto, particularly affecting the Don Valley Parkway and leaving approximately 53,280 customers without power. At the peak of the storm, 167,000 customers experienced power outages. Environment Canada had issued a rainfall warning, with heavy downpours leading to flash floods and traffic disruptions. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority warned of hazardous conditions near bodies of water.
Toronto Fire has conducted multiple rescues, and the city received over 700 calls about basement flooding. The storm resulted in significant flooding in low-lying areas, and parts of Union Station and several roads, including near Pearson International Airport, were severely affected. David Phillips from Environment and Climate Change Canada noted the unique intensity of the storm. Mayor Olivia Chow and Premier Doug Ford have addressed the city’s recovery efforts. This storm marked one of the wettest days on record at Pearson Airport, surpassing previous rainfall records for July 16.
