Peru Is the World’s Biggest Panettone Lover — and the Numbers Prove It

When it comes to panettone, Peru reigns supreme. Even more than Italy — the birthplace of the iconic Christmas cake — Peru is the world’s largest consumer of panettone. On average, Peruvians eat about 1.1 kilograms per person per year, adding up to roughly 34,000 tons annually, more than Italy’s total consumption.

That said, Peru isn’t the biggest producer — that title belongs to Brazil.

Brazil: The Global Panettone Factory

Thanks to strong Italian influence, panettone is a Christmas staple in Brazil. The country is home to Bauducco, the world’s largest panettone producer, capable of making over 300,000 tons a year — about 75 million units. Traditional fruit panettone still leads sales, but chocolate-filled versions are growing fast. Brazil also exports around 10 million panettones annually to North America.

Peru’s Panettone Goes Global

Peru’s panettone exports are on the rise. Between January and October 2024, exports hit USD $9.6 million, a 13% increase from the previous year. The United States is the top market, accounting for half of all exports, followed by Chile, Bolivia, and the Netherlands.

Iconic Peruvian Brands

Beloved local brands like D’Onofrio, Gloria, Todinno, and Winter’s dominate holiday tables. Even supermarkets — and fast-food chain Bembos — now sell their own versions.

Prices range widely: from budget-friendly options around S/12 to a luxury panettone priced at S/1,539 in Lima.

One thing’s clear: for Peru, panettone isn’t just a dessert — it’s a holiday tradition with global reach.
