Panama Celebrates World Cup Dream — But Federation President Hit With FIFA Ban

Just days after Panama secured its spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, controversy has overshadowed the celebration. FIFA has suspended Manuel Arias, the president of the Panamanian Football Federation, for six months after he failed to comply with an earlier disciplinary ban linked to inappropriate comments made toward a women’s national team player.

Arias was previously sanctioned for fat-shaming star midfielder Marta Cox in 2024 after she publicly criticized the conditions surrounding the women’s national team. Despite serving a prior suspension, FIFA says Arias violated the terms of that ban, leading to a fresh six-month suspension and a fine of nearly $25,000 USD.

The timing couldn’t be more dramatic. Arias will miss the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C. this December — a high-profile event set to be attended by global leaders — and his suspension will end just weeks before the tournament kicks off across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

While Arias faces potential fallout and has the right to appeal, Panama’s men’s national team remains focused on history after their convincing 3–0 win over El Salvador sealed qualification.

For Panama, it’s a moment of pride on the pitch — and a reminder that leadership off the field matters just as much.
