This follows Ecuador’s controversial raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito in April 2024 to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, who had been granted asylum by Mexico. Ecuador claimed the asylum was illegal due to Glas facing corruption charges. Sheinbaum had supported Noboa’s opponent, Luisa Gonzalez, in the recent election, but her call for a recount was denied.
