Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo made history as the first woman elected president of Mexico in the country’s largest election to date. She will officially assume leadership on Tuesday, taking over from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, continuing his leftist agenda. Her presidency comes amid ongoing human rights issues and economic challenges from a nearly two-decade-long war on drugs.

The transfer of power will occur at the Congress of the Union in a ceremony attended by national and foreign dignitaries, including a U.S. delegation led by First Lady Jill Biden. Sheinbaum is also expected to address the public at the Zócalo in Mexico City.
