Mexico’s music community is mourning after Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist, composer and co-founder of Mexican indie-rock band Camilo Séptimo, was killed alongside members of his family in a shocking attack.

Meléndez, 38, was found dead inside his home in Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico, on September 1. His pregnant wife Ana Paula, 35, their three-year-old daughter Sofía and 21-year-old Aleyda Romero, who worked with the family, were also killed. The family’s dog was also found dead.

The couple’s six-year-old son survived the attack and was found physically unharmed inside the home. He was later placed in the care of relatives.

Two Suspects Arrested

Authorities moved quickly following the killings, arresting two men in less than 12 hours.

One of the suspects has been identified by authorities as a business partner of Meléndez. Investigators allege that he may have used his relationship with the musician to gain access to the home. The exact motive remains under investigation.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the killings on Thursday, calling the situation “very sad and regrettable” and saying relatives of the victims are receiving government support.

Camilo Séptimo Mourns Its Co-Founder

Camilo Séptimo paid tribute to Meléndez, known as “Honas,” remembering his life, music and contributions to the group.

Meléndez helped found Camilo Séptimo in 2013 and played a major role in developing the band’s electronic and alternative-rock sound through keyboards and synthesizers. He contributed to several of the group’s albums during his career.

The killings have generated widespread attention across Mexico and the Latin music community as authorities continue investigating what led to the attack.
