For the first time since 2007, Mexico’s beloved national soccer team, El Tri, has returned to Oakland — and the buzz around their upcoming showdown with Japan at the Oakland Coliseum couldn’t be louder. Fans across the Bay Area have been flocking to practices, hotels, and city streets in hopes of catching a glimpse of their heroes.

From Raul Jiménez to head coach Javier Aguirre and assistant Rafael Márquez, the star power has fans lining up for photos, autographs, and a chance to connect with the team before Saturday’s highly anticipated clash.

“It’s going to be a tough matchup. Japan has really been developing over the years,” said lifelong Mexico fan Ivan Castro, echoing the excitement — and nerves — shared by many supporters.

A Minor Setback Before the Big Match

In the midst of the anticipation, news broke that the team’s training equipment truck was broken into near their downtown Oakland hotel. Thieves reportedly took resistance bands and training materials. While disappointing, a team representative assured fans that it was a “minor incident” and would not impact preparations.

“It’s sad it happened. If I could say sorry to the players, I would,” said Alfredo Montoya, a fan waiting outside the team’s hotel.

Local leaders, including Oakland Councilmember Noel Gallo, acknowledged the frustration but emphasized the bigger picture. “We’ve got to recognize that soccer is an international sport,” Gallo said. “Let’s enjoy soccer. Let’s make Oakland once more an international city.”

More Than a Match

Beyond the headlines, the match itself is what truly matters. Thousands are expected at the Oakland Coliseum, with fans from both sides turning the stadium into a sea of passion, pride, and energy. For Oakland’s large Mexican and Latino community, the game is more than a sporting event — it’s a cultural celebration.
