Lionel Messi’s return to Toronto this weekend brought an energy to the city that felt bigger than just another regular-season MLS match. Fans packed BMO Field on Saturday as Lionel Messi suited up for Inter Miami CF against Toronto FC, turning the waterfront into a sea of pink jerseys, chants, and nonstop excitement.
Messi delivered exactly the kind of performance fans came to see, recording a goal and two assists in Miami’s 4-2 win over Toronto FC. But while his brilliance on the pitch stole headlines, the match was also marked by repeated interruptions as multiple fans stormed the field trying to get close to the global superstar.
In total, four pitch invaders made their way onto the field throughout the game. One fan managed to get dangerously close to Messi before slipping and being quickly tackled by security, while another attempt followed shortly after. The wildest moment came late in the match when two fans rushed the pitch at the same time in what appeared to be an effort to overwhelm security personnel. Despite the chaos, stadium staff reacted quickly and prevented anyone from reaching Messi.
The frenzy extended beyond the stadium as well, with videos circulating online showing fans pushing through security barriers outside the venue before kickoff. It all highlighted just how massive Messi’s presence continues to be whenever he steps onto Canadian soil.
Saturday marked only the second time Messi has played in Toronto and the first time he started a match at BMO Field. Incredibly, the soccer icon has played in Canada just five times in total, all since 2024 — making every appearance feel like a once-in-a-generation event for local fans.
Inter Miami is scheduled to return to Canada on July 25 for a match in Montreal, although it remains unclear whether Messi will travel with the club for that game.
