Medellín is set for a landmark night as Lionel Messi takes the field with Inter Miami CF against Atlético Nacional at Estadio Atanasio Girardot. The friendly—dubbed “The Match of History”—marks the first time Messi plays a club match on Colombian soil.
Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. ET, with a family-friendly festival vibe around the event, including Fan Fest activities in the lead-up. Inter Miami arrive as reigning MLS champions under head coach Javier Mascherano, and the Medellín stop is part of a broader South American “Champions Tour” that also includes matches in Lima and Guayaquil.
While Messi has appeared in Colombia before with Argentina—such as World Cup qualifiers—this is his first time facing a Colombian club with a professional team. That alone makes the night a milestone for local fans who have long followed his career from afar.
Miami’s expected lineup features global names like Luis Suárez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Sergio Reguilón. They’ll meet an Atlético Nacional side anchored by Colombian veterans David Ospina, Edwin Cardona, Matheus Uribe, and William Tesillo.
Inter Miami’s squad has evolved since its title run, with a younger Argentine core joining the mix—names like David Ayala, Facundo Mura, and Tadeo Allende—signaling a balance of star power and youth for the new season.
Demand has been intense, with ticket tiers spanning general admission to VIP experiences like the “Lounge Camerino,” where fans can watch players take the field. Atlético Nacional president Sebastián Arango framed the occasion as a showcase of the club’s international stature.
After Medellín, Inter Miami wrap their South American swing in Ecuador before returning stateside to begin their MLS title defense. For now, though, the spotlight is on Colombia—where one of football’s all-time greats adds a new line to his globe-spanning career.
