Max has officially released the trailer for its upcoming original series CHESPIRITO: NOT REALLY ON PURPOSE, an eight-episode biographical drama inspired by the life of legendary Mexican entertainer Roberto Gómez Bolaños. The series will premiere globally on Max on June 5, with new episodes released weekly.

Widely known by his beloved stage name “Chespirito,” Gómez Bolaños left an enduring legacy in Latin American popular culture. A writer, actor, comedian, director, and producer, he created iconic characters such as El Chavo del 8 and El Chapulín Colorado, whose humorous adventures transcended borders and generations.

A Tribute to a Cultural Icon

CHESPIRITO: NOT REALLY ON PURPOSE delves into the life of the man behind the laughter, tracing his path from a childhood dreamer to a household name across Ibero-America. The series spans from the 1950s to the 1980s, offering an intimate look at the man who broke into a nascent television industry while navigating personal sacrifice, romantic challenges, and creative triumphs.

Pablo Cruz leads the cast as Roberto Gómez Bolaños, bringing to life not only Chespirito but also his beloved alter egos, including El Chavo, El Chapulín Colorado, and Dr. Chapatín. The ensemble cast includes:

  • Paulina Dávila as Graciela Fernández

  • Bárbara López as Margarita Ruíz (Doña Florinda)

  • Arturo Barba as Rubén Aguirre (Professor Jirafales)

  • Andrea Noli as Angelines Fernández (La Bruja del 71)

  • Miguel Islas as Ramón Valdés (Don Ramón)

  • Juan Lecanda as Marcos Barragán (Quico)

  • Eugenio Bartilotti as Edgar Vivar (Señor Barriga and Ñoño)

  • Paola Montes de Oca as María Antonieta de las Nieves (La Chilindrina)

Also featured are Iván Aragón and Dante Aguiar portraying younger versions of Gómez Bolaños, while Macarena García plays a young Graciela Fernández.

In a heartwarming tribute, real-life friends and colleagues María Antonieta de las Nieves and Edgar Vivar make special guest appearances. The cast is further enriched by appearances from Roberto Gómez Fernández and Esteban Valdés, the son of Ramón Valdés.

A World-Class Production

Led by the artistic vision of Roberto Gómez Fernández and Rodrigo Santos, the series is directed by Santos, Julián de Tavira, and David Ruiz “Leche.” It features top-tier talent in costume design (Annaí Ramos), cinematography (Marc Bellver and Diana Garay), and music composition (Camilo Froideval). The script was developed by Roberto and Paulina Gómez Fernández, offering an authentic, deeply personal lens into the legendary entertainer’s journey.

The series is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Discovery, THR3 Media, and Perro Azul, with executive producers including Mariano Cesar, Bruce Boren, Alexis Fridman, and the Gómez Fernández family.
