The Seattle Mariners made a statement in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 3–1 at a packed Rogers Centre.
It started off like a dream for the home crowd — George Springer blasted a leadoff homer that sent 44,000 fans into a frenzy. But after that? Crickets. Toronto managed just one more hit the rest of the night as Seattle’s pitching shut things down.
Bryce Miller was lights out, going six strong innings to pick up the win, while Andrés Muñoz slammed the door in the ninth for the save.
On offense, Cal Raleigh — who crushed 60 bombs in the regular season — went deep again, hammering a 420-foot shot to tie the game in the sixth. Jorge Polanco followed with two clutch RBI singles, giving Seattle all the insurance they needed to take control of the series.
For the Jays, Kevin Gausman (1–1) looked sharp after a shaky start, retiring 15 straight batters at one point. But when he left with two outs in the sixth, the Mariners pounced.
Toronto’s offense, which averaged 8.5 runs per game in the division series, just couldn’t find its rhythm this time. The loss also snapped their six-game home winning streak — not exactly the way they wanted to open the ALCS.
Game 2 goes down Monday afternoon in Toronto before the series shifts to Seattle’s T-Mobile Park on Wednesday. The Jays will be looking to bounce back — and fast.
