In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro has decreed that Christmas celebrations will begin on October 1, a move seen as an attempt to distract from the country’s ongoing political and economic turmoil. Maduro made the announcement on live TV, promising Venezuelans a Christmas of “peace, happiness, and security.” However, the country remains gripped by political instability, following Maduro’s disputed claim of victory in the July presidential election. Evidence suggests he actually lost to opposition leader Edmundo González, whose arrest has been ordered.
The regime is also facing increased international pressure, with the U.S. reportedly preparing to sanction 15 top officials for obstructing free elections and repressing post-election protests, during which over 20 people were killed and 1,700 arrested. Despite Maduro’s efforts to divert attention, including his past attempts to reschedule Christmas, Venezuela’s deep political crisis and economic collapse continue to dominate the national landscape.
