BARRIO – We caught up with Coach Louis Toromoreno to talk about North York FC’s successful trip to the New York City Cup. For those who don’t know, this tournament has become a staple event for the most competitive teams worldwide. Over the last 7 years, the event has been known to attract only the best teams traveling in from over 24 states, Canadian provinces, France, UK and the Caribbean.
North York FC took their two high performance teams, U-17 boys and U-17 girls’ teams to Randal Park Island Sports Complex (nestled between Harlem and the Bronx). Having played multiple games within a short period of time, both teams dealt with injuries and adversity. This did not stop them from performing at a very high level against some of the best competition in the world.
The boys competed and represented the club well, but were unable to advance to the final rounds.
The girls were able to advance to the finals, knocking off a highly ranked team from Baltimore and ultimately winning the New York City Cup, 2 nil.
We asked Coach Louis how he got the team prepared for the tournament. “We’ve been preparing for this trip for six months. The girls have been logging many training hours, both indoors and out, in anticipation for the tournament. One week before departure, the girls finished tied for first in the qualifying round of the outdoor season. A huge accomplishment leading up to the success in New York.”
“In order to perform at a high level in New York, the players had to commit to an itinerary that required the players to maintain a tight schedule, that included athletic therapy and wellness, meal schedules and more. Our athletes would not have been able to perform at a high level without the support and commitment from Rob Tello of R3 Physiotherapy and Wellness. We had players that would not have been able to make it through the weekend without a dedicated physiotherapist who catered to each players’ needs.
What’s next for the U17 boys and girls? As it pertains to the girls, the success of the NYC Cup has allowed a complimentary entry to the Desert Super Cup in Pheonix Arizona later this year. In addition, both the boys and girls will be entering several local and out of country showcases and/or tournaments.
We wish North York FC the best.
