Mattel, the company behind toys like Barbie and Hot Wheels, is making a movie about Bob the Builder. Bob, now called Roberto, goes to Puerto Rico for a big construction job, tackling issues on the island. Jennifer Lopez is spearheading an animated feature about a Latino construction worker voiced by Anthony Ramos. The film aims to mix nostalgia for those who know Bob with a fresh appeal for new audiences.
Bob the Builder originally aired from 1999 to 2011, and this movie is part of Mattel’s move to turn its toys into films. Other projects include a Barbie movie and plans for Polly Pocket and Barney the Dinosaur adaptations. The success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film has spurred on these endeavors. Mattel bought Bob and other characters in 2011 for $680 million, and this movie is part of their effort to bring these characters to the big screen in new and exciting ways.
