Brazil has won its first-ever Oscar for Best International Film with I’m Still Here, directed by Walter Salles. The film tells the true story of Eunice Paiva’s fight to uncover the fate of her husband, Rubens Paiva, who was kidnapped during Brazil’s military dictatorship in 1971. The movie has been a massive success, drawing over four million viewers in Brazil and winning Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival.

Actress Fernanda Torres was nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Eunice, and Salles dedicated the Oscar to her in his speech. The film has sparked national debates about Brazil’s past, leading to the reopening of Rubens Paiva’s case and discussions on the country’s amnesty law. Amid political tensions, the film has become a symbol of resilience, even being quoted by President Lula da Silva. Despite boycott attempts from Bolsonaro supporters, I’m Still Here has been widely embraced as a powerful reflection on Brazil’s history and democracy.
