‘I’m Still Here’ Wins Brazil’s First Oscar for Best International Film

Brazil has won its first-ever Oscar for Best International Film with I’m Still Here, directed by Walter Salles. Actress Fernanda Torres was nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Eunice, and Salles dedicated the Oscar to her in his speech. The film has sparked national debates about Brazil’s past, leading to the reopening of Rubens Paiva’s case and discussions on the country’s amnesty law. Amid political tensions, the film has become a symbol of resilience, even being quoted by President Lula da Silva. Despite boycott attempts from Bolsonaro supporters, I’m Still Here has been widely embraced as a powerful reflection on Brazil’s history and democracy.
