One of the most unexpected stories heading into the FIFA World Cup 2026 has nothing to do with goals, trophies, or superstar players. Instead, it revolves around a defender from New Zealand who went from relative obscurity to internet sensation in less than 48 hours.

Tim Payne, a veteran member of New Zealand’s national team, has seen his social media following explode after Argentine influencer Valen Scarsini launched a campaign to find what he called “the least known player” heading to the World Cup. Scarsini encouraged his followers to support Payne, and the internet quickly ran with the idea.

The results have been astonishing. Payne’s Instagram account jumped from roughly 4,700 followers to more than 1.7 million in just two days, making him one of the most talked-about underdog stories ahead of the tournament. The defender now boasts a larger social media following than many of New Zealand’s most recognizable athletes and public figures.

Fans from Argentina have embraced Payne as an unlikely cult hero, flooding his posts with humorous messages, creating tribute videos, and even producing a viral song called “No Payne, No Gain.” Some supporters have jokingly compared him to Argentine legend Ángel Di María, while others have declared him their favourite player at the World Cup.

Payne responded with a heartfelt thank-you video, speaking partly in Spanish and expressing his gratitude for the unexpected support. While New Zealand enters the tournament as one of the lowest-ranked teams, the All Whites now have an international fan base cheering them on.

In a World Cup expected to be dominated by stars like Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappé, Tim Payne’s story is a reminder that football’s magic often comes from the most unexpected places.
