Game 7 Showdown: Leafs Aim to Complete Stunning Turnaround

The Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a familiar yet exhilarating position—preparing for another Game 7. This time, however, there’s a different tone to the team’s approach, shaped by the steady hand of head coach Craig Berube.

After an embarrassing 6-1 loss in Game 5 that had critics writing them off and speculating about the future of players like Mitch Marner, the Leafs bounced back with a gritty, structured 2-0 win in Game 6. That response—rooted in Berube’s call for simplicity, aggression, and puck management—has kept their Stanley Cup hopes alive and set up a dramatic finale at home.

Berube’s key message heading into Sunday night’s showdown at Scotiabank Arena? Stick to what worked. No freelancing. No improvisation. Just repeat the formula that earned them a disciplined win in Florida.

“You have to be determined, you have to be desperate and you’re going to have to have urgency,” Berube said—laying out the blueprint for what playoff hockey, especially Game 7, demands.

History isn’t on Toronto’s side. The Leafs have lost six straight Game 7s and haven’t won one since 2004. But there’s a sense—cautious as it may be—that this group, under Berube’s stern, playoff-tested leadership, could be different.

The combination of a lockdown effort, a recommitted top line, and a now surging home crowd gives the Leafs a chance to finally flip their Game 7 narrative. Marner and Auston Matthews, who connected on the game-winner in Game 6, will be critical once again. And if the team brings the same desperation and discipline, they could earn a date with the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final.

Sunday night’s puck drop at 7:30 p.m. is more than just a game—it’s an opportunity for redemption, history, and maybe a redefined legacy.
