El Salvador has launched one of the largest criminal trials in its history, putting 486 alleged leaders of MS-13 on trial in a sweeping case that reflects the country’s ongoing crackdown on gang violence.
According to authorities, the group is collectively accused of committing more than 47,000 crimes between 2012 and 2022, including murder, extortion, drug trafficking, and arms dealing. Among the charges are alleged roles in the March 2022 قتل wave that left 87 people dead in a single weekend—an event that prompted President Nayib Bukele to declare a nationwide “war on gangs.”
Officials say they have “compelling” evidence and are seeking maximum penalties.
The scale of the trial is unprecedented. Over 400 suspects are already in custody, while dozens more are being tried in absentia. Charges also include femicide, disappearances, and even “rebellion,” with prosecutors arguing that the group attempted to establish territorial control resembling a parallel state.
This moment marks a new phase in El Salvador’s controversial security strategy. Since 2022, a state of emergency has allowed for mass arrests and expanded police powers—moves credited by the government for reducing violence, but heavily criticized by human rights groups for enabling arbitrary detentions.
Now, the courtroom becomes the next battleground.
And the outcome could shape the future of justice—and security—in El Salvador.
