Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa was reelected, winning about 56% of the vote, according to early results. His opponent, Luisa Gonzalez, who got 44%, is not accepting the results and claims there was fraud, though there’s no solid evidence so far.
Noboa is a young millionaire and conservative leader known for his tough crime-fighting approach, which some support and others find too extreme. He came to power in 2023 and will now serve a full four-year term.
Many Ecuadorians are worried about rising crime, linked to drug trafficking, and both candidates promised to crack down on it. Noboa had declared a state of “internal armed conflict” earlier this year to fight gangs, sending soldiers into the streets. The homicide rate has dropped, but it’s still much higher than it used to be.
Some voters say they picked Noboa just to reject Gonzalez, while others say they voted for Gonzalez to oppose Noboa’s authoritarian style. The country is very divided, and tension is rising because of claims of ballot irregularities and arrests on election day.
Now, it remains to be seen whether Gonzalez will formally ask for a recount, and how Noboa will move forward with his plans.
