Courts in Argentina and Venezuela issued warrants for the arrests of each other’s presidents

Venezuela has issued an arrest warrant for Argentina’s President Javier Milei, along with his sister Karina Milei and Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, accusing them of “theft” related to the seizure of a Venezuelan plane in Buenos Aires. In response, an Argentine court ordered the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his aides for crimes against humanity, requesting Interpol’s help to capture them. The Argentine court invoked universal jurisdiction, which allows serious crimes to be prosecuted regardless of location. This diplomatic clash stems from Milei’s vocal opposition to Maduro’s regime and the contested 2022 seizure of a Venezuelan cargo plane, before Milei took office. The Venezuelan warrant against Milei is largely symbolic, as he is unlikely to visit the country.
