Consumers and business owners are committing to buying local and avoiding American products

In response to proposed U.S. tariffs, many Canadians, including consumers and business owners, are committing to buying local and avoiding American products, even after a 30-day tariff pause was announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former President Donald Trump. Citizens like Glenn Naylor and Ann Williams have vowed to prioritize Canadian goods as a long-term change, with some businesses dropping U.S. imports entirely.

Retail leaders and union officials are encouraging stores to promote Canadian-made products more prominently. However, economists like Matt Poirier and Moshe Lander caution that a full boycott of American goods is unrealistic, citing higher costs, limited local options, and potential negative economic impacts. Despite this, advocates for the movement emphasize national pride and the importance of self-reliance, viewing this as an opportunity to strengthen Canada’s economy and identity.
