Colombian Navy Seizes $5.6M in Cocaine

The Colombian Navy announced Tuesday that it intercepted a “go-fast” vessel carrying more than 115 kilograms of cocaine in the Pacific Ocean — just as Gustavo Petro was meeting Donald Trump at the White House.

According to officials, the speedboat was spotted roughly 55 nautical miles off Colombia’s Pacific coast during a counter-narcotics operation. As naval forces approached, the crew allegedly fled and dumped 116 rectangular packages into the sea. Authorities later recovered the cargo, which they estimate equals nearly 289,000 individual doses with a street value of $5.6 million.

The timing adds political weight to the seizure.

Colombia — the world’s largest cocaine producer — has faced mounting pressure from Washington over rising cocaine production and trafficking routes through the Pacific and Caribbean. Relations between Bogotá and Washington have been tense in recent months, with sanctions, sharp rhetoric, and stepped-up U.S. maritime operations targeting suspected drug shipments.

Despite diplomatic friction, both leaders described their meeting as productive. Meanwhile, Colombia has highlighted a series of recent high-profile drug busts, including multi-ton seizures in the Pacific, as proof of intensified enforcement efforts.

The message from Bogotá: it’s still fighting — on land and at sea.
