CN Tower Turns 50 — And Canada Is Celebrating with a Glow-in-the-Dark Toonie

Toronto just got a new symbol you can literally carry in your pocket.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic CN Tower, the Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a special commemorative $2 coin—and it’s not your average Toonie.

Officially revealed at a ceremony inside the CN Tower itself, the limited-edition coin stands out with a unique glow-in-the-dark design, making it only the second coin in the Mint’s history to feature this effect. In total, just three million coins will be released, including one million standard versions and two million coloured versions that illuminate in the dark.

Designed by Canadian illustrator Carl Wiens, the coin captures both the past and future of Toronto. At its centre is the CN Tower shining bright against the city skyline, with a detailed contrast between Toronto’s 1976 skyline on one side and its modern 2026 cityscape on the other. A stylized “50 years” engraving ties it all together, marking half a century of one of Canada’s most recognizable landmarks.

Standing 553 metres tall, the CN Tower has been a defining part of Toronto’s identity since opening in 1976. Originally built as a telecommunications tower, it held the title of the world’s tallest free-standing structure for over three decades and remains the tallest in the Western Hemisphere today.

More than just a coin, this release is a tribute to Toronto’s growth, innovation, and global presence. As Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne put it, it gives Canadians a chance to carry a piece of that history with them.

And with its glow-in-the-dark feature, it’s safe to say—this is one piece of Toronto that truly shines.
