Canelo Alvarez Outboxed: Terence Crawford Hands Mexican Superstar a Rare Defeat

For years, Canelo Alvarez has been the face of boxing, the man opponents feared and fans revered. But on Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the Mexican superstar met his match in Terence “Bud” Crawford, who delivered a boxing clinic to dethrone Alvarez as undisputed super middleweight champion.

The judges scored it 116-112, 115-113, 115-113, all in favor of Crawford, who became the first man in history to win undisputed titles in three different divisions. For Alvarez, it was only his third career loss, and one that may sting more than the others—not because he was knocked down, but because he was methodically outclassed.

Canelo had moments, pressing forward with his trademark power shots, but Crawford’s spacing, movement, and counters frustrated him throughout the night. The Mexican warrior could never quite close the distance, often swinging at air or walking into Crawford’s sharp punches. By the middle rounds, it was clear Alvarez needed a knockout to change the tide, but Crawford’s discipline denied him the chance.

With a record now at 63-3-2 (39 KOs), Canelo remains one of the most decorated fighters of his generation. Yet this loss raises new questions: Has the pound-for-pound king begun to slip, or was this simply a case of running into a fighter whose timing and skill set were perfectly suited to neutralize him?

One thing is certain—Canelo Alvarez is still a legend. But on this night, the boxing world belonged to Terence Crawford.
