The Government of Canada has updated its travel advisory for Mexico, specifically warning about gang-related violence along the Gulf of California in areas such as Culiacán and Mazatlán. This advisory, issued on October 28, highlights recent clashes between rival armed groups, with reports of ongoing gunfire and armed individuals stopping vehicles on highways. Mazatlán, a popular destination for Canadians, especially during the winter season, is facing renewed instability due to gang activity. This comes after similar violence in January 2023 when flights were briefly suspended following the arrest of Ovidio Guzman, son of former cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, which led to widespread unrest, including roadblocks and threats to infrastructure.
In light of recent events, Canadian travelers are advised to “exercise extreme caution” and “limit movements” in affected areas to prioritize safety.
