Canada has announced $7 million in humanitarian assistance for Caribbean countries devastated by Hurricane Melissa, the powerful Category 5 storm that has claimed dozens of lives in Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti.
Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State for International Development, said $5 million will go toward emergency response and health services, while $2 million will support the UN World Food Program’s efforts to deliver food and essential supplies in Jamaica.
Sarai, joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, said Canada stands ready to deploy emergency stockpiles through the Red Cross if requested. “We’re standing with the Caribbean today,” he said.
Ottawa also reaffirmed its commitment to helping the region recover in the long term—through investments in climate resilience, disaster planning, and efforts to ensure small island nations have better access to funding for sustainable infrastructure.
As Caribbean communities begin rebuilding, Canada’s pledge underscores its ongoing role as a key partner in regional disaster response and climate adaptation.
