Canada’s women’s national team snapped a five-game international losing streak in style Sunday, defeating Colombia 4–1 in their opening match of the SheBelieves Cup.
Vanessa Gilles opened the scoring in the 31st minute, rising above defenders to head home a corner delivered by Janine Sonis. Sonis later doubled the lead in the 67th minute after earning a penalty herself, calmly placing her shot into the left corner past Colombian goalkeeper Katherine Tapia.
Sydney Collins extended Canada’s advantage in the 73rd minute, before Colombia responded when Leicy Santosconverted a penalty in the 81st, beating Kailee Sheridan.
Nichelle Prince sealed the victory in the 90th minute, putting the finishing touch on a confident performance from the Canadians.
The match was physical throughout, with seven yellow cards issued. Colombia’s Gisela Robledo received two yellows, resulting in a red card.
Canada now turns its attention to a high-profile clash against the United States on Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio.
