Bukele re-elected as El Salvador president

Nayib Bukele, the President of El Salvador, has won big in the elections because people appreciate his tough stance against gangs, which has improved safety in the country. Bukele declared himself the winner, claiming over 85% of the vote, and his party is expected to control almost all seats in the legislative body.

Bukele’s approach involved arresting a large number of people, leading to a significant drop in murders. Despite concerns about the long-term sustainability of mass arrests, many voters see this as the reason for the improved security and support Bukele.

Traditional political parties received very little support, as people rejected the violence and corruption associated with them. Bukele, known for his strong online presence, came to power in 2019 promising to tackle gang violence and boost the economy.

In his second term, Bukele’s biggest challenge is the economy, which has been slow to grow. Plans for a Bitcoin City haven’t gained much traction, and poverty rates have increased. The country is also in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a significant bailout due to its fragile fiscal situation.
