A Cruzeiro soccer fan died on Sunday following a violent ambush by Palmeiras supporters in São Paulo state. The attack occurred as Cruzeiro fans were returning to Belo Horizonte after their team’s 3-0 loss to Athletico Paranaense. The ambush, reportedly carried out by Palmeiras ultras, left at least 12 others injured.

Brazilian authorities confirmed that the deceased fan, a 30-year-old man, succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Mairiporã, approximately 46 kilometers from São Paulo. Video footage from the scene showed a bus engulfed in flames and several fans on the ground being assaulted with sticks and punched by rival supporters.

Cruzeiro expressed sorrow over the incident, calling it “yet another episode of fan violence” in Brazil. São Paulo’s public security secretariat has provided limited information on the attack, and Palmeiras has yet to issue an official statement. This tragedy underscores ongoing issues with fan violence in Brazilian soccer, which has seen a rise in recent years, despite efforts to curb such incidents.
